For
Jere Anttila, or "Gerilla" as he is known professionally,
photograpy is both job and avocation. A native of Finland, he makes
his living in the visually-related worlds of advertising, marketing
communications and web programming. He has been taking photographs
for over 15 years. His photos reveal a fascination with nature -
especially flowers, butterflies and insects - as well as with the
opposite - gritty, urban subjects, especially construction and industrial
landscapes.
Gerilla specializes in night photography, using
long exposures to create dramatic effects. We discovered his image
"Reinforcement" in his photo gallery on Flickr.com, a
web-based photo sharing site. The photo shows a reinforced concrete
framework for part of a wastewater treatment plant under construction,
shot below sea level, in the absence of light. It fulfills other
criteria alive and well in much of Gerilla's work: abstraction and
ambiguity, as well as a moody, monochromatic palette. We thought
the photo a good play on the concept of "industry," and
a fitting introduction to this highly varied area of RBB's practice.
